OLM Confirmation Program Service Requirement:  
20 hours of service across the 2 years of the program.  
Five of the 20 hours need to be in an OLM Ministry.

The service component of the confirmation program helps our candidates understand that Jesus calls us to be servants for one another.   We hope the service that they participate in will help them build a heart for service – so that they will carry out service for the rest of their lives. 

Below are some ideas for service opportunities that are available to your candidates. Check your flocknote/emails for continual opportunities to serve.

Some of the opportunities below are annual (they happen only once a year), and some are things that your candidate could do any time during the year.  Many of the opportunities below will require adult involvement.  For some, you might want to get the whole family involved! Lead by example.

You may have service opportunities that your candidate is already doing for organizations that are important to you – those hours also count!   The service your candidate participates in does not have to be only what is on this list.

SOME SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

1. Knights of Columbus Food Drives 
2. Knights of Columbus Breakfast - needs 4-5 helpers 
3. Earth Day clean up of OLM property.  Look for email
4. Living Stations of the Cross - 10 service hours. Look for email in January, 2026
5. Riverdale Public Library  book sale in March, each year. They need helpers to set up and breakdown the sale. Call Dennis at 973-981-7011 if you would like to help and gain service hours.
6. Helping the Ladies Guild distribute wreaths in Advent after Masses. Look for email 
7. Chili Making - Ongoing service, COUNTS TOWARDS OLM HOURS   Service Opportunity that requires adult supervision.  Making Chili, in your home, and delivering to OLM.  OLM will bring the chili to Fr. English in Paterson and it will be distributed to families in need. Look for email on 10/26/25
8. Serve during the 6 PM Mass on Sundays on the days of Confirmation Class.  Look for email
9. Greeting Cards for our Troops abroad. Does not count towards OLM hours.  https://www.operationgratitude.com/give/product-donation/  
10. Letter writing to our Service People.  Does not count towards OLM hours  https://www.operationgratitude.com/letters/
    Take a picture of the candidate writing the letters, to be attached to the service log.  Any other type of verification that Operation Gratitude may send include with service log.  As parent you can sign off on the amount of hours your candidate spent writing letters.  
11. Veggie Garden at Tri-borough Food Pantry. Look for email
12. American Flags for Veterans at cemetery.  See look for email 
13. Christmas Letter/Cards to Wounded Military Personnel. Look for email
14. The Type 1 Willpower Turkey Trot is on Thursday, November 24, 2022. This 5K supports people living with Type 1 diabetes. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and they are looking for student volunteers. Email: [email protected]  DOES NOT COUNT FOR OLM HOURS 
15. Knight of Columbus - Breakfast with Santa - on Saturday, Dec. 3. 8:30-12:00.  Two hour minimum required to serve.
    Positions needed:
    food servers 
    bus boys & girls 
    set up/clean up people 
    Santa's helpers 
    one computer savvy for data entry person
